CAPE MAY JAZZ FESTIVAL NOV 6-8

“A Tribute to the Count”

Swing with the timeless, priceless Legendary Count Basie Orchestra* directed by Bill Hughes at the Cape May Jazz Festival presented by New Jersey Department of Travel and Tourism and Bank of America November 6th for one big thrill 8pm – 10pm in the Theatre at Lower Regional High School.  The Count Basie Orchestra of today is nineteen performers committed to upholding the Basie tradition with a keyboard set in motion, always swinging Kansas City style, winning 17 Grammies and continuing to perform across North America, Europe and Southeast Asia….come back to Basie. Friday night continues with Richie Cole and “alto madness” in Carneys Other Room.  Richie is a master of the sax, a brilliant arranger, composer who constantly shows that there is life, humor and creativity found in classic bebop. He is “one of the last of the breed – a fast and competitive musical gunslinger demonstrating his command of Charlie Parker’s bebop language” states All About Jazz.  Barbara King returns by popular demand with her dusky, Sarah Vaughan-like qualities performing in Victorian Gardens at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel.  Raised with a mix of family background cultures from Cuba, Jamaica and Costa Rica and surrounded by music and dancing, Barbara was introduced at an early age to jazz legends such as Sarah, Ella, Dinah and Billie who influence her singing.  Continuing in Carneys Main Room is the Radam Schwartz Quintet featuring Radam pumping out driving rhythms on the Hammond B3 along with Anthony Ware on sax, James Gibbs III on trumpet.  Radam’s prolific career has led to many successful recordings having performed with David Fathead Newman, Eddie Lockjaw Davis and many others.  Friday night is rounded out with Gary Allegretto who is being considered for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album…. a versatile harmonica rockin’ the pure electric and acoustic blues in Cabanas. Allegretto sings with a natural storytelling appeal, a wry sense of humor while his harmonica comes as natural as his own voice that makes you dance from the first song ‘til the last.
Ravi Coltrane, a true renaissance man who is at the forefront carving up new paths within jazz, opens Saturday night at the Theatre featuring Geri Allen on piano along with Massimo Biolcati, bass, and E. J. Strickland, drums.  A modernist who has absorbed a wealth of jazz ranging from his father John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins to contemporary figures such as Steve Coleman, Wayne Shorter who owes equal debt to Joe Henderson. The listener hears the “elusive beauty” of Ravi through his tenor and soprano saxophone as an explosion of rhythmic and melodic sequences that float through the air with grace…deep, soulful, masterful with the appealingly Hendersonian tendency to lay back even when he is driving hard.  Saturday night continues to thrill with Houston Person performing at the Jazz Dinner at Aleatheas with open seating at 11pm.  A reviewer calls him the natural heir to the boss tenor crown worn so long and
so well by Gene Ammons.  It is all “tone”, no flash but instead the warmth of his sound,
lingering over every note….his solos are tuneful enough to be part of the melody of any

standard.  Denise Thimes graces Victorian Gardens with her brilliant voice ranking with the all-time greats such as Ella, Sassy, Lady Day, Nancy and Carmen to name a few. She has shared the
stage with Clark Terry, Dr. Billy Taylor, Jimmy and Tootie Heath, James Moody and will continue to steal the show.  Teddy Royal, international instrumental guitarist, will perform with Kyle Kohler on organ and Ken Fowser, sax, in the Boiler Room at Congress Hall. Teddy just won “Best Musician” at the American Idol Talent Show at the Borgata and will fly to Vegas as Borgata’s guest to compete in the finals.  Royal calls New Orleans his home where he wrote and recorded with the Staple Singers, Allen Toussaint, Patti LaBelle, the Neville Brothers and was Fats Domino’s guitarist for 30 years.  Royal has had a life-long love affair with music which began while growing up listening to the music of Wes Montgomery…..Wes can be heard throughout his playing.   Edgardo Cintron and Inca return to Carneys Main Room by popular demand with a “Tribute to Carlos Santana”, a Latin blast from the past!  Trumpeter Dominick Farinacci performing in Carneys Other Room began his career listening to Louis Armstrong and Harry James, received a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee, opened for Wynton Marsalis at the Tri-C Jazz fest in Cleveland after which Wynton invited him to solo with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra .  In 2008 he debuted with his own band at the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Tri-C JazzFest.  This gifted, mature and very versatile artist performs with warmth and rich lyricism and is a talent who will be remembered.  Memphis Gold who continues the blues tradition at Cabanas evokes the vintage sounds of southern soul and blues and reveals his golden knack for resuscitating southern musical traditions.  Gold appeared on the cover of February 09 Living Blues Magazine where he is called a throwback to the blues men of yore who learned their licks at the knee of legendary patriarch Charlie Patton, King of the Mississippi Delta Blues.
The festival includes Jam Sessions Saturday and Sunday in Carneys, Blues Jams in Cabanas with Alan Weber and Frenz Saturday and Frank Bey and the Swing City Blues Band Sunday along with the Saturday CD Signing Party compliments of Barefoot Wines.  The 12noon pre-jams at Carneys feature astounding, very talented young musicians ages 11-17….a special treat.

Eight Million YouTube Views and a Sonny Rollins iPhone App

Bret Primack is pleased to report that his YouTube Jazz Video Guy channel has passed eight million views and that he’s just released a Sonny Rollins iPhone App.  On the cutting edge of technology and music since he co-founded Jazz Central Station the first major Jazz website in 1994, Bret is an advocate for utilizing new media as marketing and distribution tool for Jazz.  “To reach new listeners," Bret believes, "and consolidate the existing global Jazz audience, it’s important to provide access to Jazz on all new media platforms like YouTube and the iPhone, as well as social media networks Facebook and Twitter.”

The Jazz Video Guy

Bret has produced and posted over four hundred videos YouTube and websites for artists and labels.  Working closely with Sonny Rollins, Joe Lovano, Billy Taylor, the Concord Music Group and Mosaic Records, Bret has developed a reservoir of content and a loyal, enthusiastic worldwide following.  “What’s different now," Bret explains, is that my audience communicates directly with me through email, Facebook and YouTube comments.  Jazz is truly a global medium and the internet empowers musicians and record labels to facilitate the creation and distribution of content with a direct connection to the listener."

The Sonny Rollins iPhone App

The Sonny Rollins iPhone App, Bret’s latest creation, is a mini-website where users can listen to Sonny’s music, watch videos, and purchase concert tickets.  “Once the free App is downloaded from iTunes, it’s very easy to sample and purchase the music, from any location.  One click the music is automatically downloaded to the iPhone. Thirty five million iPhone users is a considerable potential audience for Jazz Apps worldwide."

San Diego, CA - September 25, 2009 - Saxophonist and composer Tom Braxton's latest release, "Endless Highway," takes you on the ride of your life. Joined by an outstanding array of instrumentalists and vocalists, this recording is a toe-tapping, colorful, groove-oriented excursion with a sophisticated urban flavor that will make you feel like dancing and singing all day long. "Endless Highway," his second release on the San Diego-based Pacific Coast Jazz label, lifts Braxton to a new level of artistry as he pays homage to his friend and mentor, professional basketball player and bass guitarist, Wayman Tisdale, who recently lost his battle with cancer. Wayman was recently inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and Tom will be performing at the October 21st Gala in honor of the occasion. The highly anticipated new recording is scheduled for national release on October 6, 2009. To hear audio clips, visit Tom Braxton's website at: http://www.TomBraxton.com.

"We're excited to have the opportunity to represent Tom Braxton's most impressive CD to date," says Donna Nichols, founder and president of Pacific Coast Jazz. "This new disc highlights Braxton as a composer, producer and arranger along with six of his original compositions that feature his effortless transition from soprano, alto and tenor saxophones to showcasing his versatility on piano, keyboards and flute." Nichols' label has teamed up with publicist Joy Foster of SV Media Relations and radio promoter Cliff Gorov at All That Jazz for access to international media buying and radio promotion.

Braxton has shared the stage with renowned artists including Dave Koz, Rick Braun, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, Jeff Golub, Marcus Miller and Luther Vandross along with opening concerts for Norman Brown, Boney James, Dave Brubeck, Cab Calloway, David Benoit and The Crusaders. He has been featured in media and publications such as JAZZIZ, Smooth Jazz News, CBS's The Saturday Early Show, BET's Jazz Central, CNN, NBC's Inside Stuff and many others. Without a doubt, "Endless Highway" will drive Tom Braxton to the top of the charts while we take a trip with his inspiring tunes at home or on the road. So get ready to pack your bags, roll down the windows and crank up the volume in the "Braxton tradition." "Creating music that brings people joy is my mission in life," says Tom. Looks like he has accomplished his mission on "Endless Highway."

Pacific Coast Jazz, founded in 2003, is an independent jazz label that also offers artist management services. All PCJ artists are distributed worldwide by MVD Audio/Big Daddy Music. ABOUT TOM BRAXTON:

Saxophonist and composer Tom Braxton understands his purpose on earth is to create music that touches our hearts. That's why Jazz Review calls Braxton, "...one of smooth jazz's most prolific saxophonists...with all the required tools to become a major force." A seasoned performer, who knows how to charm audiences of all ages, Braxton has his own distinctive and recognizable sound which incorporates elements of Jazz, Latin, Funk and R&B and leaves listeners spellbound, filled with a sense of joy as his music swirls through your soul.

But jazz didn't always come easy growing up in the dusty plains of Lubbock, Texas where it all began for Tom Braxton. As unlikely an environment as it was for a boy to dream of being a jazz musician, Tom fortunately had a direct link to this creative art form through his dad, James ("J.T.") Braxton. "I have to credit my dad with connecting me to jazz at an early age. He introduced me to all the jazz legends: Lester Young, Miles, Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Stitt, Getz, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins and many more. He would share how he had heard Count Basie and Duke's original bands and the great Ella Fitzgerald. He put the alto sax in my hands in the 6th grade, after I had been playing piano for two years. At the age of 90, my dad still plays his tenor sax and violin everyday, and he's still gigging!"  After graduating valedictorian from high school, Tom attended Texas Tech University on track and music scholarships. "I love to run, and the 200, 400 and 1600-meter relay were my best events." This fact explains his driving energy and stamina on stage today.

During his college years, Braxton formed the jazz-fusion band "No Compromise" which toured the southwest and opened concerts for Joe Sample, Stanley Clarke, George Howard and many others. The band performed many of Tom's original compositions, which helped to fine-tune his writing style. Tom decided to launch his solo career after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music/Performance degree. His first act of business was to join forces with keyboardist and producer Bernard Wright to release his solo debut album, "Your Move." "The highlight of my first release was having the opportunity to record a duet with long-time friend Kirk Whalum on the song 'Peacemaker.'" Bernard Wright not only produced Braxton's first CD, but also was instrumental in connecting him to a gifted musician/producer who would elevate Tom to the national touring circuit, Wayman Tisdale. "I have to credit Bernard Wright with getting me the gig with Wayman. I flew to Sacramento and played with Wayman where we opened a concert for the Yellowjackets. I'll never forget it . . . it was 1992!!  Except for a few years off when my sons were born, I became a regular part of Wayman's group." Wayman Tisdale was quoted saying, "When I'm on the road, Tom is the saxophonist I want to have with me. I love that sweet sound he gets on the horn."

Braxton's solo career continued with his second album, "Katallasso," that mixed memorable, easy funk melodies with some unique production touches. In April 1998, the CD was released internationally on Positive Music Records and featured the talents of Kirk Whalum, Paul Jackson Jr., Bill Maxwell and Bill Cantos. The next two albums took a brief departure from mainstream smooth jazz by connecting with Tom's spiritual side. In 1999, he released an instrumental praise and worship CD entitled "Face to Face" followed two years later with the release of a Christmas album, "Comfort and Joy," that presented Braxton's fresh arrangements of traditional and contemporary holiday favorites. His friend and mentor, Wayman Tisdale, produced his fifth release, "Bounce," for Dave Koz's label, Rendezvous Entertainment. "I remember Wayman approached me with the idea of doing a recording together," said Braxton. "I was very excited about the project and the creative juices began to flow. We had a lot of fun in the studio playing with grooves and melodies and as a result the CD, 'Bounce,' was born."

In 2007, Tom added a new CD to his discography, "Imagine This," on the Pacific Coast Jazz label. "The album kicks off with one of my favorite songs, 'Peg,' by Steely Dan which is a band I've always admired. I wanted to cover that song for years and I when I finally got the opportunity, I was thrilled to include the unique vocal work of Kevin Whalum." SmoothJazz.com wrote,  "(Tom Braxton)... absolutely blows me away with his album 'Imagine This.'  I'm imagining that this will be the big breakout release for a career that is really kicking into high gear."

Through the years, Tom has shared the stage with many well-known artists including Dave Koz, Rick Braun, George Duke, Kirk Whalum, Jonathan Butler, Jeff Golub, Marcus Miller, Luther Vandross and Phillip Bailey. Tom has opened concerts for numerous jazz greats including Norman Brown, Boney James, Najee, Dave Brubeck, Cab Calloway, Spyro Gyra, The Rippingtons, David Benoit, Pieces of a Dream, Michael Franks and The Crusaders. Over the years, Braxton has been featured or appeared in media and publications such as JAZZIZ, Smooth Jazz News, CBS's The Saturday Early Show, BET's Jazz Central, TBS, TNT, ESPN, CNN, NBC's Inside Stuff, Positively Texas, ABC's Good Morning Texas and the Fox Network's Good Day Dallas.

In 2009, on the heels of finishing his next Pacific Coast Jazz label CD release, shocking news hit Braxton when Wayman Tisdale lost his battle with cancer. "Wayman was a gifted musician and a great friend that I will always miss. I stood on his right side for over seventeen years and it was my goal to make him sound great every night. Through the years, I became good at blending my sound with his, a valued skill I learned while in his band. Wayman's passing is a reminder of our mortality and it has made me even more determined to live my life to fulfill the purpose God has for me."

Tom's latest project, "Endless Highway," highlights Braxton as a composer, producer and arranger along with six of his original compositions that feature his effortless transition from soprano, alto and tenor saxophones to showcasing his versatility on piano, keyboards and flute. Bursting with exhilarating grooves and sizzling hot horn arrangements, "Endless Highway" manages to lift Braxton to a new level of artistry and is a testament to the many challenges Tom has faced along his highway of life. He hopes it will help others as they continue down their own road. "We are all on this road of life, moving at our own pace, experiencing the smooth places where you can relax and the rough roads that can challenge and discourage you. But we must never forget how important it is to enjoy the ride!"

And Braxton definitely takes us on a memorable ride on this sensational soundtrack. Joined by an outstanding array of instrumentalists and vocalists, this recording is a toe-tapping, colorful, groove-oriented excursion with a sophisticated urban flavor that will make you feel like dancing and singing all day long. From the first and title track, "Endless Highway," which signifies the beginning of this rhythmic ride, to the final track, "Home Sweet Home," that transports us to the end of the CD that chronicles the many experiences we face in life, Braxton creatively completes the full circle of a smooth jazz journey.

Jazz Religion, the Second Line, and Black New Orleans
Richard Brent Turner

"Turner straddles religions, music, the performance arts, languages, nationalities, and identities skillfully ... with aplomb, with brio, in a language all his own that sings." —Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

This book explores the history and contemporary significance of the popular religious traditions, identities, and performance forms celebrated in the second lines of the jazz street parades of black New Orleans. Turner investigates how the African diasporist religious identities and musical traditions are reinterpreted in New Orleans jazz and popular religious performances, while describing how the participants in the second line create their own social space and become proficient in the arts of political disguise, resistance, and performance.

Richard Brent Turner is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa and author of Islam in the African-American Experience (IUP, 2003).

The Jazz Fiction Anthology
Edited by Sascha Feinstein and David Rife

"A superb selection that illuminates the fascinating variety of literary responses to jazz." —Dan Morgenstern, author of Living with Jazz

"No previous anthology of jazz-inspired fiction has assembled under one roof such a culturally varied and historically important group of stories. Here at last is a beautiful, carefully chosen collection, as surprising as the music, as swinging as the rhythms of this age." —A.B. Spellman, author of Four Lives in the Bebop Business

A gathering of the best jazz fiction from the 1920s to the present, this anthology includes 20th-century fiction by Eudora Welty, James Baldwin, Richard Yates, and others, plus important recent work from writers such as Yusef Komunyakaa, Xu Xi, and Amiri Baraka. Together these artists demonstrate the strong influence of jazz on fiction. What sounds throughout these stories is the universal voice of humanity that is the essence of the music.

Sascha Feinstein is editor of Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz & Literature; The Jazz Poetry Anthology (IUP, 1991) and The Second Set (IUP, 1996) (both with Yusef Komunyakaa); and Ask Me Now: Conversations on Jazz and Literature (IUP, 2007). In 2008, Feinstein was named Pennsylvania's Governor's Awards Artist of the Year.

David Rife is author of Jazz Fiction: A History and Comprehensive Reader's Guide.

Keith Balla – Drums

Born in Israel, 25 year old Yaala Ballin began her jazz career while in high school. Immersing herself in the artistry of Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington, with their profound synthesis of soul and sophistication, she rapidly became an integral part of Israel's vibrant jazz community. Arriving in New York in 2005, she quickly won the admiration of many of the city's brightest talents.

"Travelin' Alone" is Ms. Ballin's debut recording as a leader. The performances are highly personal statements, perfectly balancing each song's narrative qualities with Ms. Ballin's outstanding command of theory and harmony. The CD swings relentlessly, and is infused throughout with the profound inflection and emotional subtext of the deepest Blues.

‘Made In The UK’ 2009 Concert Series

Rochester and New York City will play host to the largest ever series of UK jazz concerts in June 2008. Arts Council England have agreed to support the British artists programmed at this year’s Rochester International Jazz Festival, New York (RIJF), as part of their international concert series ‘Made in the UK’.

Produced by ESIP, the artists selected for the nine RIJF concerts from 12 – 20 June are The Peter King Quartet, Liane Carroll Trio, the Neil Cowley Trio, Tessa Souter Quartet, Tony Kofi Quartet, Norma Winstone with Gareth Williams & Tim Garland’s Lighthouse Trio. Huw Warren and the Paula Gardiner Trio will also be performing at the festival to represent ‘Welsh Jazz’.

Additional concerts in NYC will be launched with a double bill of BBC Jazz award winning singer-pianist, Liane Carroll, and legendary saxophonist Peter King at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Lincoln Center on 8 June. Neil Cowley is also confirmed for ‘Joe’s’ Pub in New York on 16 June with Grammy nominated singer Norma Winstone pairing up for a double bill with NYC-based Tessa Souter on 20 June, while saxophonists Tony Kofi and Tim Garland pair up at the same venue on Sunday 21st.

Artist Biographies

PETER KING QUARTET
With Martin Drew (Drums), Steve Melling (piano) & Geoff Gascoyne (Bass)
For nearly forty years saxophonist Peter King has been internationally recognised as Europe's leading Parker-disciple. His virtuosity as a bebop player led him to play in small groups alongside Bud Powell, Max Roach and Milt Jackson and with the big bands of Count Basie, Ray Charles and Johnny Dankworth. His immensely powerful playing technique has continued to evolve drawing on more recent harmonic innovations, while never losing innate swing. King continues to tour regularly in Europe and is a regular soloist with the Charlie Watts Quintet.

LIANE CARROLL TRIO
Singer/pianist Liane Carroll is one of the most popular figures on the UK jazz scene. A beautiful singer, her shows lead an audience through soulful blues, powerful funk, and heart-rending ballads all delivered with wit and charm. She has worked with a huge variety of artists from Sir Paul McCartney and Gerry Rafferty to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Since 2007 Carroll has won a number of awards including 'Best Vocalist' and 'Best of Jazz' categories at the BBC Jazz Awards and 'Musician of the Year' at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards 2008.

THE NEIL COWLEY TRIO
Fizzing with the energy of rock and the surging dynamics of dance music, the Neil Cowley Trio have been placed at the forefront of the British ‘Post-Jazz’ movement – a scene driven by simple musical curiosity, a post ipod, everything fits aesthetic that says the old certainties of form and genre are increasingly redundant. Classically trained, Cowley is a dazzling pianist and outstanding composer; indeed, his beautiful, sometimes forceful melodies and thrilling climaxes earned his trio’s debut recording, Displaced, a BBC Jazz Award for Best Album. Helped by Cowley's “mischievous humour” and “marvellously English wit”, the trio have built a reputation for their captivating, exciting live shows and remarkable rapport with their audience.

HUW WARREN
Pianist and composer Huw Warren is known as one of the UK's most individual and versatile creative forces with work crossing the divides between Jazz, Contemporary Music and World Music. Along with solo performances and commissions, he has collaborated internationally with Mark Feldman, Peter Herbert, Maria Pia De Vito and Theo Bleckmann amongst others. Huw is also known to many as co-founder of cult Brit jazzers "Perfect Houseplants" and regular arranger/musical director for folk singer June Tabor. As a composer Huw has been commissioned by the BBC, Piano Circus, RSC, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Welsh Chamber Orchestra, Tango Siempre, LPO Renga Ensemble, ABRSM, Palladian Ensemble, Koch Ensemble, Elena Riu, and numerous festivals worldwide.

PAULA GARDINER
Paula Gardiner’s presence on the Welsh Jazz scene has been an inspiring one for a long time. As well as heading up the Jazz course at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Paula is the Honorary President of the Swansea-based organisation, Women in Jazz. In fact, Paula has been so active around the region that it is surprising that she has yet to achieve the wider recognition in Britain and Europe that she so richly deserves. One of Britain’s most lyrical and melodic bass players, Paula Gardiner is also an accomplished classical guitarist and flautist. Her first influences from the Jazz world came from European players like Eberhard Weber, highly melodic musicians and composers, who draw on a European heritage, as well as on Jazz.

TESSA SOUTER
With Jason Ennis (guitar), Gary Wang (bass), Conor Meehan (drums)
Born in the UK, the daughter of Trinidadian and English parents, now New York-based vocalist, composer, and lyricist Tessa Souter imbues a mix of jazz and stunning originals with the soul and passion of flamenco, Indian and Middle Eastern music. New York Sun critic Will Friedwald. The Philadelphia Inquirer raved about her "amazing" debut CD Listen Love and "crystal-clear voice with diamond-cut phrasing.” Drum legend Joe La Barbera says: "Tessa is a unique voice in jazz." She moved to New York in the late 90’s where she started sitting in at jazz jams. Following a brief spell at New York's Manhattan School of Music, she studied privately with jazz vocal legend Mark Murphy, who says of her, ‘She’s a complete musician - extraordinary and moving’.

NORMA WINSTONE with GARETH WILLIAMS
Born in London, Norma Winstone first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott's Club with Roland Kirk. Although she began her career singing jazz standards, she became involved in the avant garde movement, exploring the use of the voice in an experimental way and evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation. She continues in the forefront of British jazz and was nominated again in the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards for best vocalist as well as being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in the same year. Norma performed her debut concert as a featured artist in New York in June 2008 at Joe’s Pub with great audience reaction and critical success. In 2009, she received a Grammy nomination, and the presigious Skoda Jazz Prize for her contribution to European Jazz. Gareth Williams is one of the most intensely creative, dynamic and exciting performers on the UK scene. He has been receiving increasing critical and public acclaim since becoming a professional musician in the early 90s. Described as “a jewel of a player... spinning out luminous introductions and codas” by Jazziz Magazine (USA), he has dazzled audiences not only by his virtuoso approach to the piano, but also by his multi-instrumentalist talents on guitar and vocals.

TONY KOFI QUARTET featuring JONATHAN GEE
Kofi plays soprano, alto, and baritone saxophone with equal dexterity and accomplishment; his soprano has a Coltrane-like fluidity; his alto agile and peppery: his baritone dark toned, sonorous and bold. After studying at Berklee on a full scholarship, Kofi went on to be a member of two of British jazz's most influential groups in the 1990s - the Jazz Warriors and Gary Crosby's Nu Troop. He has since appeared with Branford Marsalis, Courtney Pine, Queen Latifah, Ralph Moore, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers and was recently invited to join the World Saxophone Quartet alongside David Murray, Oliver Lake and Hamiet Bluiett. His quartet features his own compositions drawing on the blues, Gospel, Jazz, funk, Latin, African rhythms, Be-bop and infused with his love of Thelonious Monk.

TIM GARLAND’S LIGHTHOUSE TRIO
Tim Garland is widely known as one of the UK’s most successful musical exports working in jazz. He first made international waves playing saxophone, bass clarinet and flute with Chick Corea, and has also toured and recorded extensively with Vibes player Joe Locke and drum legend Bill Bruford. He has orchestrated five of Chick’s best loved pieces for the Grammy Award winning "The New Crystal Silence" album - described by Pat Metheny as "magnificent and creative arrangements". The Lighthouse Trio features award-winning pianist Gwilym Simcock, described by Chick Corea as "...an original - a creative genius", and the incredible Israeli percussionist, Asaf Sirkis. They will be performing music from Tim’s new album Libra (Global Mix).

Sanofi-aventis Jazzfest 2009
The Metropolitan Region’s Oldest Mainstream Jazz Festival
June 5-6
Drew University • Madison, New Jersey
http://www.njjs.org/

The metropolitan area’s oldest mainstream jazz festival will take place on the campus of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey on June 5 and 6 with almost 100 musicians performing on three stages! The festival kicks off on Friday June 5 at 7:00 PM with a free concert featuring three of New Jersey’s best high school bands. With JVC withdrawing from the New York scene, the sanofi-aventis Jazzfest is now the region’s only true straight ahead jazz festival.

On Saturday, the gates open at 11:00 am and the music begins at noon and runs until 10:00 PM. In the afternoon, four bands will alternate sets on three stages both indoors in the Dorothy Young Performing Arts Center and outdoors under the jazz tent. Those bands include a tribute to the great Benny Goodman with the Allan Vache Benny Goodman Tribute Big Band, the Houston Person Quartet, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Trio da Paz and the Generations of Jazz with Pam Purvis.

In the evening, three groups take the main stage with the Rio Clemente Trio and vocalist Laura Hull kicking things off at 5:30 pm. At 7:00 pm, jazz singer Curtis Stigers takes the stage followed by Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra.

·       The Benny Goodman Tribute Big Band is one of the official bands approved by the great clarinetist’s estate to celebrate the centennial of his birth. Led by Allen Vache, the band features some of the swingingest musicians in jazz, including Warren Vache, Terry Blaine, Randy Reinhart, Tom Artin, Mark Shane and Joe Ascione.

·       Complimenting the swing of the Goodman band will be Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks whose recreation of hot jazz from the twenties and thirties have made them one of the most sought after ensembles in the country, with many guest appearances in film and on radio.

·       Trio da Paz brings together three of Brazil’s top jazz musicians, Romero Lubambo, Nilson Matta and Duduka deFonseca. Their brand of infectious South American jazz has given them a worldwide audience.

·       Saxophonist Houston Person is riding a new wave of popularity as a younger generation is discovering his soulful, bluesy style. Although he has recorded more that 75 albums, he has never lost his creative, swinging edge.

·       In the evening, Jazzfest will feature the locally popular Rio Clemente Trio with singer Laura Hull from 5:30 to 7:00. They will be followed by singer Curtis Stigers who has made the transition from pop star in the 1980s to jazz star today. He has appeared with Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Wynton Marsalis, to name a few of the great artists who love his style. He has been called the “best male jazz singer of his generation” by the critics.

·       The evening concludes with one of the best big bands on the scene today, the all-woman big band Sherrie Maricle & the DIVA Jazz Orchestra. Leading critic and reader polls consistently rank them as one of the best big bands in the world and for good reason. Following in the tradition of the Buddy Rich Big Band, DIVA blends a contemporary sound with a big band tradition. Their performances are uniquely spontaneous, energetic and lots of fun.

The sanofi-aventis Jazzfest co-sponsored by RXR will also feature great food and many vendors all day on Saturday, including a special Southern Barbecue, sales of rare CDs and vinyl records, jazz related art and jewelry as well as many craft and retail vendors. The festival is also made possible by the generous support of corporations and local organizations, including JazzMobile, Madison Downtown Development Commission, Toyota of Morristown, WBGO Jazz88FM and JazzTimes Magazine. The Best Western Morristown Inn is the official festival hotel and offers a special discount room rate for attendees of the festival. The Morristown Inn is located just two miles from the Drew campus in historic Morristown.

Tickets are only $50.00 in advance, but will be $65.00 at the gate on June 6. New Jersey Jazz Society members enjoy even larger savings. For more information, advance sale discount tickets, membership information and hotel reservations log onto
http://www.njjs.org/ or call 800-303-6557. Students are $10.00 at the gate and kids 16 and under are free. Drew University is conveniently located on Route 124 in Madison and parking is free.

Mixing traditional New Orleans street music with funk danceability and a shot of hip hop attitude, New Orleans' own Hot 8 Brass Band has epitomized New Orleans street music for over a decade. The band plays the traditional Second Line parades, hosted each Sunday afternoon by Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, infusing their performances with the funk and energy that makes New Orleans music loved around the world.

The members of Hot 8 Brass Band were born and raised in New Orleans and many began playing together in high school. What makes Hot 8 so special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns. An evening with the Hot 8 is like no other...

Announcing Hot and Cool: 40th Anniversary of Jazz at NEC

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of its Jazz Studies Program, New England Conservatory celebrates with two week-long series of concerts in Boston (October 2009) and NYC (March 2010).

A highlight will be the world premiere of a new work written by renowned saxophonist Wayne Shorter to be performed with his Quartet and the NEC Philharmonia on Saturday, October 24 in NEC's Jordan Hall.

A full press release is below.  I hope you'll consider covering this amazing program, of which alum Frank London says:  "Everything that I have done throughout my career has been based on the lessons that I learned at NEC."

Please let me know if you'd like a full press kit (either hard copy or electronic) or more information. The more I learn about this program, its faculty and its students, the more impressed I become.

All the best,

NEC's Boston celebrations kick off October 18 and will feature nightly ticketed concerts at venues including the Western Front, Regattabar, Scullers Jazz Club, and NEC's Jordan Hall.  In addition to the Wayne Shorter performance, the weekend will be highlighted by an All-Star Jam with the NEC Jazz Orchestra, October 23 in NEC's Jordan Hall. Among confirmed artists for that program are Bob Brookmeyer, Danilo Perez, Roger Kellaway, Carl Atkins, Fred Hersch, Don Byron, Ran Blake, and Rachael Price with more to come. In addition, there will be public masterclasses and numerous free concerts featuring student groups at various off-campus locations. Tickets for the Boston events go on sale May 1.

NEC's Community Performances and Partnerships department will also be organizing a variety of concerts and clinics throughout the Boston area to connect with jazz lovers and performers of all ages.

The New York City celebrations take place March 21-27, 2010 with the centerpiece at B.B. King Blues Club on March 27. Headliners confirmed for that performance are John Medeski, Regina Carter, Fred Hersch, Harvey Mason, Don Byron, Carl Atkins, and Ran Blake. Other venues are Birdland, Blue Note, the Jazz Standard, and Dizzy's.  Performers for those concerts will be announced shortly.

History of NEC Jazz Studies

The first fully accredited jazz studies program at a music conservatory, NEC's program was the brainchild of Gunther Schuller, the jazz historian, horn player, composer, author, and conductor. Principal Horn in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra at age 19, Schuller had discovered Duke Ellington as a teenager and pronounced jazz as important as classical music. Named President of the Conservatory in 1967, he moved quickly to incorporate jazz into the curriculum.  By September 1969, he had gotten his unprecedented program approved by the National Association of Schools of Music and began offering classes. Closely allied to the Jazz Studies program was his Third Stream department, which came along a few years later and which linked classical and jazz into a new genre.

Schuller chose his jazz faculty with a connoisseur's discernment.  The first department chair was saxophonist Carl Atkins.  Composer George Russell, who conceived the Lydian Chromatic Concept (which has importantly influenced jazz greats from Miles Davis to Maria Schneider), began a Conservatory association that has continued to the current day. Retired from teaching, the NEA Jazz Master is now Distinguished Artist-in-Residence Emeritus.  Pianist Jaki Byard, called a "walking encyclopedia of jazz," brought his eclecticism and generosity of spirit to his NEC teaching. And Ran Blake, who Schuller had discovered pushing a broom at Atlantic Records, came to NEC in 1968 and became the first chair of the Third Stream Department in 1974.

During the early years of Jazz at NEC, Atkins formed a trio composed of Donald Pate on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Ron Fransen on piano. With Atkins as saxophonist and coach, the group toured jazz festivals recruiting students and attracting national attention to the new NEC program.  Among the earliest students to enroll were Stanton Davis and Ricky Ford. Brought in by Ran Blake, Ford fronted the house band at Wally's Café while playing in Jaki Byard's big band and Schuller's repertory band at the Conservatory.  "My participation in the NEC jazz ensemble under Jaki's direction prepared me for entrée into the Ellington Orchestra," Ford has recalled.

By the time Schuller retired as President of NEC in 1977, the list of jazz graduates was already impressive.  They included Anthony Coleman (who has returned to teach at NEC), Marty Ehrlich, Fred Hersch, Jerome Harris, Michael Moore, and Bo Winiker.

Throughout the history of NEC's Jazz Studies program, the faculty has continued to be distinguished by its wide range of important artists including trumpeter John McNeil; saxophonists Jimmy Giuffre, Steve Lacy, and Joe Allard; drummer Bob Moses; bassist Dave Holland; trombonist-composer-arranger Bob Brookmeyer; pianists Michael Cain and Stanley Cowell; and guitarists Gene Bertoncini, Chuck Wayne and Jack Wilkins.  Vocalist Dominique Eade, who graduated in 1984, then became the first jazz performer to receive an NEC Artist Diploma in 1989, joined the faculty and has been a magnet for gifted young singers. Several, like Kris Adams, Luciana Souza, Lisa Thorson and Patrice Williamson, have gone on to prestigious careers.

So illustrious is NEC's jazz faculty that five of the most eminent have received MacArthur "Genius" grants (Lacy, Russell, Blake, Schuller, and Miguel Zenón).  In addition, Schuller, Brookmeyer, Russell, and Ron Carter have all been named NEA Jazz Masters.

Similarly, prominent alumni of NEC reads like a Who's Who of Jazz and includes: Bruce Barth, Regina Carter,  Freddy Cole, Marilyn Crispell, Marty Ehrlich, Ricky Ford, Satoko Fujii, Jerome Harris, Fred Hersch, Roger Kellaway, Mat Maneri, Harvey Mason, Andy McGhee, Bill McHenry, John Medeski, Vaughn Monroe, Michael Moore, Hankus Netsky, Jamie Saft, George Schuller, Luciana Souza, Chris Speed, Cecil Taylor, Cuong Vu, Phil Wilson, Bo Winiker, Bernie Worrell, Rachel Z, Rachael Price, Richie Barshay, and Bridget Kearney.

Hello, List:

Just a quick note to let you know that I'll be performing a solo piano concert this Saturday, May 2nd.  It's in a very intimate space - Northwest Pianos, 13310 Bel-Red Road, Suite 100, Bellevue.  From what I've heard the venue has been converted from a furniture store into a piano shop, so there's comfortable seating and a great piano.  I'll play from 5:00 - 6:30, and although there's no official cover charge, donations are encouraged.

Over my 30-year career I've probably played thousands of faceless solo piano gigs, along with the thousands more concert gigs with my own band and as a sideman in other groups.  But I can't remember EVER playing a solo piano concert, so this is a first for me, alone and naked (musically speaking; believe me, that's all you'd want) onstage.

I don't have any prepared solo repertoire, so I'm planning to make this an all-request program.  I'll be asking people to shout out suggestions; mainly standards and jazz compositions, and I'll see if I can put a unique spin on them.  I'll also consider the occasional 70s pop request (especially Beatles songs) from those in the grip of mid- life nostalgia.

It should be a nice, informal change-of-pace from most of my other gigs, and it would be great to have a full house.  Kids are welcome, too.  More info at http://www.northwestpianos.com/

Hope to see you soon...

The Cause: For 20 years, the Jazz Foundation of America has been quietly keeping jazz and blues alive, handling over 5,000 emergency musician cases since Katrina, keeping hundreds from eviction, creating employment, and so much more.

The Problem: With venues closing down, fewer sponsors for festivals, and legends getting too old or too sick to tour, they are depending on us more than ever.

What you can do: Angels are needed. Buy a ticket to the concert. If you cannot make the concert, donate today. If each of us buys a ticket or donates just $20, we can continue to sustain those whose music has sustained us all these years.

The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff and Jimmy Katz

Spring, 2009 JazzPrezzo proudly announces the release of The Blue Note Years: The Photography Of Francis Wolff and Jimmy Katz in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Blue Note Records, the most important record label in the history of jazz.

This elegant coffee table book, including two CDs of music, spans an incredible seventy years of the label, from its beginnings to the present, through the eyes of two master photographers. The images, many of them never seen before, capture the major artists in modern jazz at historic recording sessions and other contexts. In recognition of this unique collection, the Jewish Museum of Berlin plans a special exhibition of photographs from the book for the fall of 2009.

Designed by award winning designer Ingo Wolff, the book features essays by producer Michael Cuscuna,  Blue Note president Bruce Lundvall, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder, and jazz historian Ashley Kahn.

Wolff’s Rolleiflex caught each important development from traditional and swing-era styles of the 40’s through bebop, hard bop, soul, avant-garde, and even the first sounds of fusion.

Photographs include jazz legends  Sidney Bechet and Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and Horace Silver, Miles Davis and Clifford Brown, and Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, breadth staggering in its historical importance.  The story continues with jazz greats Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Andrew Hill, Cassandra Wilson and Joe Lovano.

Wolff’s iconic black and white photographs, intimate, relaxed, and respectful of the musicians and their craft, raised jazz players to a heroic level. His point of view endures today: musicians intensely working on their instruments, peering at sheet music or talking among themselves, playing the music with eyes gazing off into space or closed in musical rapture.

In the early nineties, Blue Note found Wolff’s spiritual descendent in Jimmy Katz whose style has its own distinctive signature. Like Wolff, Katz can catch the right moment, frame it, light it and shoot it in a fraction of a second. Their careers have run along parallel lines: both picked up the camera early, fell under the spell of jazz, and established a mature, visual signature. Like a Wolff image, a Katz portrait is instantly recognizable.

Ashley Kahn writes, “Seeing, as the saying goes, is believing. In the photography of both Wolff and Katz there is a deep, shared reverence for the music, captured in a way that makes us all fortunate witnesses to some private and truly historic moments.”  Bruce Lundvall comments, “This book is the nicest 70th Anniversary gift that Blue Note could get.”

Maynard Ferguson Meets Miles Davis

Louis Armstrong opened the door, but for twelve-year old trumpeter Bret Primack, Maynard Ferguson was clearly the man. Dizzy and Lee Morgan would soon follow, but Maynard was his  first live concert, which was electrifying. That edition of his big band, back in 1964, introduced Bret to the excitement of live Jazz. He always prized Maynard's Roulette recordings from that era and as fate would have it, he  had the honor of writing the liner notes for Mosaic's reissue of the Complete Roulette Recordings in 1994.

Cut to 1998, when Bret finally caught up with the man himself, four days after 70th birthday, during a weeklong gig at the Blue Note in New York. They did an interview which appeared in JazzTimes magazine, and Bret brought along my High 8 camcorder. A couple of months ago, the Jazz Video Guy rediscovered the video in his archives and has used the content as the basis for his own tribute to Maynard Ferguson.

This edition of the Jazz Video Guy blog includes Maynard's thoughts on turning seventy, Jazz education, Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Indian music and spirituality, as well as a rare clip from the mid-50s, trading stratospheric eights with Don Ellis.

N3xus radio is trying to raise funds to add an OMD to it's brand name.

I have spoken with Joe many times about the subject and I know he has plans for a unique omd.

But he needs help to make those plans real.

I know we are all in tough times, but a few dollars here and there CAN all add up.

You will find the DONATE button on the front page of N3xus:

http://www.nexusradio.co.uk/

Here are Joe's own words on the subject:

Please help if you can :)

Nigel:

"

As you know N3XUS for a long time has wanted to create it own OMD We want it to be something a bit different from the others we want it to stand out, and that aint cheap or easy.

We have had Quotes to build the site which ranged from £25,000 to £40,000 The reason its so expensive is that for all the great features, they would basically have to build an entirely new system.. or engine And my php/other programing knowledge is found wanting so the O.M.D. went on the back burner for a while

We found some guys that will do it for about $3000 Though they wont do a buy now pay later thing so we need to raise the money first.

If any of you want the N3XUS OMD to come to pass Please donate (selecting the option O.M.D.)

All we need to get the ball rolling is 30 people to donate $100 or 100 people to donate $30 or 300 people to donate $10"

Arts for Art, Inc. Proudly Presents

http://www.visionfestival.org/

COMING JUNE 9TH THROUGH 14TH TO MANHATTAN’S
ABRONS ART CENTER @ The Henry St. Settlement
June 15 at The ANGEL ORENSANZ FOUNDATION

NEW YORK, NY -- Arts for Art, Inc. is pleased to announce the schedule for the 14th annual Vision Festival, New York’s premier multidisciplinary celebration of avantjazz, poetry, dance and art, running from Tuesday, June 9th through Monday, June 15th at two of Manhattan’s most vibrant arts spaces: The Abrons Art Center and The Angel Orensanz Foundation.  Vision Festival XIV will present more than 50 events, including music and dance performances, poetry readings, film and visual art projections, a site-specific art installation by Jorgo Schäfer and three panel discussions dealing with culturally relevant issues. The final night, June 15 will be a collaboration between Arts for Art and the Angel Orensanz Foundation, featuring a display of art work of Angel Orensanz, interacting with the music and dance of the Vision Festival.

Wednesday, June 10th, the festival will feature a full night of performances celebrating a lifetime of achievement by the great Philadelphia jazz legend Marshall Allen, leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra since and key member since 1958.

This year’s schedule includes performances by musicians and groups rarely heard at the festival.  These include a special Butch Morris conduction of poets and strings; a first time appearance by AACM artist Ernest Dawkins, a reappearance by the legendary ex-patriot drummer Sunny Murray and the first time presence of the great South African saxophonist Zim Ngqawana, with a special New York-based collective. Michele Rosewoman will bring her band Quintessence (plus guests) to perform a special commissioned work
funded by Chamber Music America and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Joe McPhee will bring Trio X for their tenth anniversary. And after an absence of five years, the celebrated drummer Milford Graves will be back at the festival.

The artists that the Vision Festival has helped make us famous will be here for their annual NY appearance. This includes: The Fred Anderson Trio, William Parker Quartet with special guest, Mathew Shipp solo, Rob Brown Trio and Roy Campbell will bring his Ayler Project to New York for the first time. Peter Brotzmann will be back with first time appearance of FULL BLAST TRIO, and the list goes on…

German artist Jorgo Schäfer has contributed his artistic talents to the Vision Festival in many forms since 2002, and his live paintings of musicians have become highly representative of the festival in the minds of its supporters. This year, he contributes a beautiful full-scale installation of paintings and drawings on light-weight Chinese paper hanging from the ceiling and columns in the interior of the performance space.

Vision Festival XIV will also host a trio of panel discussions. These will be open to the public, and will serve to engage dialogue on pertinent issues in today’s music industry and community. The three talks, entitled, “The Artist’s Bill Of Rights”, “The Role Of Art In Community” and “Innovative Arts in the Classroom” will include input by local and international musicians, artists, teachers and acclaimed thinkers and authors.

Tickets for all shows (*except 6/15) are now on sale through the Abrons Art Center ticketing office.  The pricing structure has been lowered to accommodate the present economic situation. Tickets are now: $25/night in advance, $30/night at the door and $20 for students and seniors with ID.  A festival pass is also available for $150.  Tickets for the final night, taking place at the Angel Orensanz Foundation, will only be sold at the door.  Admission is free to all panel discussions.

Advance tickets are available at (212) 598-0400 or online at

About the Vision Festival:
The Vision Festival is a presentation of Arts for Art, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to building awareness and understanding of avantjazz and related expressive movements while encouraging a sense of community amongst artists and their audiences.  An annual event since 1996, the festival has grown to become the city’s premier artist-run, multi-disciplinary celebration of creative improvised music and the culture that surrounds it, drawing both concertgoers and performers from all around the world.

“Avant-garde jazz culture has no better colloquy in this country than the Vision Festival,” writes the New York Times’ Nate Chinen.  Critics have described it as “arguably the most important free-jazz fest in the U.S.” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader), “affordable like church, with comparable spiritual uplift” (Howard Mandel, New York Press), “unlike any other festival on the planet” (John Sharpe, AllAboutJazz.com) and “the most exciting, adventurous music gathering that New York has to offer” (Jason Gross, Village Voice).

“No single event in the past decade has done more for New York free jazz than the annual Vision Festival,” adds Boston Phoenix contributor Ed Hazell.  ”Besides raising the profile of musicians who’ve been marginalized by the mainstream media, the artist-run event has provided a forum for allied artists in various media in which to explore the common political-aesthetic-spiritual underpinnings of their art directly with their audience.”\

About Arts for Art, Inc.:
Arts for Art, Inc. was founded in 1995 by dancer/arts organizer Patricia Nicholson Parker, who, a decade earlier, along with world renowned bassist/composers William Parker and Peter Kowald, produced the Vision Festival precursor, the Sound Unity Festival, which was immortalized in the influential documentary film, Rising Tones Cross.  Since the first Vision Festival in 1996, Arts for Arts, Inc. has expanded its outreach to produce other related events in New York throughout the year, including the Vision Collaboration Festival and the Vision Club Series.  The organization is also closely tied to Rise Up Creative Music and Art (RUCMA), a new artist coalition that actively supports improved performance opportunities for creative musicians in New York, including the building of a dedicated venue in lower Manhattan.  For her efforts, Ms. Nicholson Parker has been nominated as Producer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) three times, winning the honor in 2003 and 2007.
