Improvijazzation Nation

Issue # 65 1/2 "Live" review

Yah, it's Charlie Saibel & "The Intrusions", live in downtown Olympia!  Actually, it's a "new" Intrusions... Charlie's still on keys, as you can see, & he sings with verve & gusto (much as he's done ever since I met him), but with the new players, it somehow seems like he's been re-energized... & that's not just th' vox, either.  When he plays that hoppin' jazz organ ('specially when he's doin' blues-oriented tunes), it sounds (now) like he's BEEN all th' way down there where those emotions reside.

The "new" drummer, Doug Senibaldi, seems to have a lot to do with the refreshing new sound of The Intrusions.  I mean, the cat can crank out those beats!  When I watch him, I'm immediately reminded of some of th' jazz joints I slid in & out of in the "Big Apple", or in downtown Frankfurt, in the mid-1960's.   He's totally intent & focused on keeping th' movement going, & he's always ON!  The kind of talent & energy for playing he displays is so cool, & it's infectious (for both th' listener & th' other players).

On this outing, there was a really great reed player on tenor & alto sax (up from Portland) named Brad Schrandt... this gent runs circles around a whole lot of players, & will amaze your ears with some of his riffs.  He's "smooth", but not so much that you can't identify that he has his own distinctive style.  Too bad he's not there on a permanent basis... I greatly enjoyed watching & hearing what he had to play... check his site out, though, to learn more about him.

We caught Charlie's "reborn" Intrusions (as you can see) at the "Oympia Farmer's Market", as well as over at the Oyster House.  I enjoyed the set at the Oyster House more, prob'ly because it fits th' jazz "image" (hep kat, cool scat & alla' that - ya' know?), but no matter where they're giggin' at, you owe it to yer' ears to check this hot new formation out - & tell 'em Zzaj sent you!  The schedule for (the rest of) the summer is below:

Sunday August 8 - Lacey Farmers Market - 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Saturday August 14 - Oyster House, 8 until 11 p.m.

Saturday August 21 - The Spar, 8 until 12 p.m.

Saturday August 28 - Oyster House, 8 until 11 p.m.

Sunday August 29 - Olympia Farmers Market - 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
